Date: Saturday - February 2, 2008Time: 10am - 3pm Place: AuSable Valley Alpacas - Jay NY - Directions This hands-on event presented by Dr Steve Purdy (U Mass Camelid Studies) is focused on testing for internal parasites in alpacas & llamas as well as measuring antibody transfer in newborn cria. Participants will have the opportunity to conduct fecal parasite tests and use a centrifuge & microscope to identify fecal parasites as well as test IgG level and total protein in crias. Other topics will include: - Neonatal exams - Antibody transfer in crias - Diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of intestinal parasites in alpacas & llamas - Meningeal worm disease and prevention - External parasites A lab will be included so that participants can conduct their own fecal parasite tests and learn to identify actual parasites with the help of Dr Purdy. Participants will also conduct tests of IgG levels using the DVM Rapid Test and total protein using a refractometer. Participants are encouraged to bring a fecal sample for testing. Blood samples are also welcome for testing IgG levels and total protein. Seminar fee is $150 & includes lunch, hand out materials AND a 10% discount on all fecal parasite, IgG and total protein testing equipment. The 10% discount covers microscopes, centrifuges, fecal parasite testing kits as well at the DVM Rapid Test for testing IgG and refractometers from Light Livestock Equipment. Space is limited to 15 attendees so that all are able to access equipment. Cancellations: If a cancellation is received 30 days prior to the event tuition paid will be applied toward a future AVA seminar. Cancellations within 30 days of the event will result in the forfeiture of the tuition as expenses have been incurred and potential attendees may have been turned away. The goal of the course is that you will be able to go home and shear your alpacas. The seminar fee will include classroom & hands on as well as a reference manual. A catered lunch will also be included as well as coffee & snack for breaks. Only 12 spots will be available in each class so that all attendees will get an opportunity to actually do some shearing.
